dieting

Since our bodies require fat, carbohydrates and protein in order to function properly, diets such as the Atkins, which limits your carb intake, the Beverly Hills diet, that limits your protein, low fat diets and other diets that restrict certain food groups should not be used to maintain proper body weight. In fact the only way to maintain proper body weight is to restrict the amount of food consumed.

Dieting and limiting your food intake will not necessarily result in maintaining a certain "body weight". Starving yourself will cause your metabolism to slow down which does result in weight gain. Eating healthy nutritious food on a regular basis throughout the day and exercising will allow your body to maintain a steady weight. Or you will even lose weight. Dieting is not the answer and works rarely.

Sam I agree with you here, but how do we educate people about this? There seems to be so many people out there that want an "easy solution" and this usually includes some very restrictive and possibly detrimental diet?

I agree with sam. If you want to be lose weight you have to live an active and healthy LIFESTYLE, not go on a two week fast or diet. I feel if you want to lose weight and keep it off, you need to have an all over change in the way you live, not just cut out carbs. When you do diets you just gain it back once you have finished. When i think of people doing those types of diets or fasts, i think of celebrities getting ready for a special event, or models getting ready for a show. It is short term and unhealthy.

Many people try all sorts of different diets and healthy cleanses. Usually they end up back at square one. I think there should be more learning in the classroom about healthy living. I think people need to know about learning how to live healthy and being better with food. No wonder people become over weight and unhealthy, its because no one knows how to eat and excercise in moderation. You don't have to run a marathon and only eat vegtables to be healthy. If we learned about this from when we were young till when we are old we would have so much more to go on then what we have now.

The only way to maintain a "proper body weight" is to know your body. If you have a really high metabolism, you may be able to eat anything you want and not affect you weight. People of this world are always so caught up in being a certain weight or a certain size. But what is most important of all is good health. You could be 250llbs, which in most cases would be considered over-weight or obese, but if you have a clean bill of health and exercise regularly it might be out of your control. Genetics have a huge effect on body type and weight and people need to focus more on good health rather than weight.

Dieting is important to having a healthy life, but that means eating right and not cutting important things out. Eating healthy food provides one with nutrients, carbs, proteins, and many other essential things. Cutting out harmful foods can make a drastic difference in one's lifestyle. Exercise is also extremely important too. There are many ways in which one can reduce calorie intake, especially by changing up recipes and using low fat ingredients. Dieting is a dangerous way to alter one's body, so just sticking to exercise and eating healthy works great.

Neil - sometimes "low fat" means added sugar and/or salt which can also have dangerous effects on a person's health. "eating healthy" means so many things to so many people, how can society determine what exactly "healthy" eating habits are? Check out this website that is promoting a calorie reduced diet. It is best characterized as undernutrition without malnutrition"

dieting can be a scary thing because people can do harm to there body if there not dieting right. when your dieting you have to do it right to be the right affect, some people thing there dieting when there actually anorexic, thats the scary part about dieting. when your dieting all you have to do is eat healthy and stay away from the fatty foods!

i agree that the combination of exercising regularly and eating healthy foods is the only long term way to staying fit. your body needs a balance of protein carbohydrates and fats to stay healthy, when you cut these thing out of your daily diet you throw your body off balance. I also agree with devon that there is no one perfect body shape and that people must look at genetics and body type.

I believe that these diets that limit the intake of one thing and encourage the intake of another are pretty useless. If someone wants to lose weight, it’s not up to how many carbs they have, it’s up to what healthy foods they're eating and the daily exorcize that they're getting. Losing weight can only be accomplished by eating healthy food and exorcizing. I agree with Elly when she says it’s all about lifestyle. Nobody will lose weight by cutting out carbs. And plus, carbs are important for the body so why would you want to cut them out if you’re trying to be healthier?

Miss Waage, the article you found is very interesting.
"undernutrition without
malnutrition" seems to me like it would be very controversial. Saying that eating less but not starving yourself will make you live longer is a scary thought. Having the lowest amount of calories your body can manage but still be able to function still sounds dangerous to me. People could get carried away with it and become so addicted to having such a low calorie diet that they could end up with eating disorders. I would rather go through life eating 2-3 thousand calories then eating 9 hundred something and live 5 years longer. It seems wrong to me, and I don't agree with doing that.

Reading from: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/negative-effects-dieting.html , "when [the] process of dieting is not properly done, the individual may fall victim to [a weakened immune system]. This [can] hinder the body’s ability to cope with the changes caused by dieting and adapting new behaviors."
Often, people get the wrong idea about what dieting really is, and what is going too far. I have heard - although cannot find anything on the subject on the internet - that a year after a major diet, all the weight lost is gained back, and doubled. Before going on a diet, it is very important, as Devon said, to know your body. About your metabolism rate, and which nutrients etc. are most important for you. If you start a diet without research and cut out an important food group that is important for your body, it can cause major problems later on.
As it's been said earlier, losing weight is not the most important thing. A HEALTHY diet, health and consistent exercise plan, and lifestyle should be the priorities.
